It was an extremely challenging day for swimming. There was a stiff westerly wind for the entire race, which the swimmers headed directly into. There was a 1-2 foot chop against the swimmers most of the way, particulraly after 11:00am. Once we passed under the Long Island Bridge, the combination of the chop from the headwind, and chop from other boat traffic made forward progress very difficult. Maura commented a few times that it felt like she was swimming on a treadmill.
Out of the water, the weather was beautiful and sunny. Lightly scattered clouds made for a brilliantly bright day with lots of sunlight. Pilots and crew on boats without shade were very dependent on their sunscreen.
Thanks to the Coast Guard Auxiliary that were on the water helping to establish a safety perimeter around the swimmers.
